Mel Young Easter Classic

The Mel Young Easter Classic is the longest-running representative basketball tournament of its kind, proudly celebrating 38 years of competition.

Each Easter, the tournament brings together the basketball community across the motu, competing in five age groups from U12 to U20, one adult grade, and exciting new grades planned for this year including Wheelchair, Whaikaha, Masters, and Walking Basketball.

With opportunities for everyone to be involved, the tournament is a true celebration of inclusion, community, and the enduring legacy of Mel Young, inspiring generations of players, coaches, officials, and supporters.

Frequently asked questions

Most participants are adults; however, youth are welcome to participate. All teams have a mix of female and male players and we supply the referees. All you need to do is turn up with your team and play!

If you’re keen to take part but don’t have a team you can submit your interest with us and we’ll do our best to find one for you. Registering your interest does not guarantee you a place, but we will do our best to get you in a team playing your preferred sport on your preferred day.

Social sports leagues are a great way to keep active while having fun and socialising with others. You can join no matter what your skill level.

Leagues range anywhere from 8 – 15 weeks depending on the time of year and the elected sport. All leagues culminate in a final for all teams followed by a prize giving. The cost to register your team depends on the length of time the league runs.
